When it comes to doing your laundry, you probably have a routine. Turn it on, pour in the soap, throw in the clothes, close the lid, and go about your day. Most of us have not changed the setting on the dial for months, maybe even years! But what about those neglected settings? What do they do, and should you be using them? Here is a breakdown of those underrated and underused washing machine cycles. You may want to give them a try.
Delicate
The delicate washing cycle was designed for fabrics that are, well, delicate. It’s the shortest, gentlest cycle on your machine. We recommend using the cold water setting if your machine usually defaults to warm water. This cycle is very similar to handwashing and it’s more versatile than you think. If you have handmade items like knitted or crocheted scarves, shawls, or blankets, this would be the perfect use for this cycle. Just remember to lay the items flat or hang to dry.
Permanent Press
Does anyone know what the permanent press cycle actually does?? We do. This cycle was created in the 1940s to cater to the introduction of synthetic materials like polyester, nylon and wrinkle-free garments. It uses warm water, a slower spin speed and a shorter cycle with the intent to keep the shape of each item. Although you can use Permanent Press for your synthetic materials, it can also be used as a gentler cycle when you want a bit more oomph than the Delicate cycle.
Heavy Duty
The Heavy Duty cycle is for what its name implies, a little extra washing power when you need it. This cycle uses a faster spin and a more thorough rinse, so it’s great for loads where you want to add a bit more soap, like gym clothes, pet bed covers, or work clothes that might need a little extra decontaminating.
So take a look at that neglected dial next time you do the laundry, you might be surprised! And remember to keep Express Appliance Repair in mind for all your appliance needs!
